"If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed.  The vision pulls you."
                                                             -Steve Jobs

THE THOUGHT PROCESS

My vision for this program is to "CREATE THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE."  Possible in this case means with the resources we have or can dream up.  Essentially, we want to strive to max out the potential of our program.  Two realities exist: 1) we do not have unlimited resources to throw money at problems/challenges to make them go away 2) we do not need money to improve our program and separate our program from others.

In order to create a standard and set of expectations which would guide the daily actions of our program, I needed to play a little “make-believe” and create the mother of all stretch assignments. We needed to create a level of excellence to pursue and paint a picture of how our program needed to look. The idea of winning a national championship seemed to be a lot of stock to put into 1 game. If we were able to create the good fortune of getting to a national championship game, would a loss mean we were failures? This thought process changed how I wanted to view success.  My vision for our program changed from putting our eggs into one basket, to providing a platform for our men to grow and win.  My belief is that with the right PEOPLE and the right PROCESSES, winning (and ultimately national championship...if we deserve it) will take care of itself.  This pivot of our focus changed our program.  Winning a national championship is still A goal; however, it is not THE goal.  With a more refined vision for the program that has more of a tangible day-to-day impact, we were able to get down to business and tighten up the processes that make our program tick.

CLOSING THOUGHT

We should strive to be remembered for the champions we make rather than the championships we win.
